Guidance for New Sailors

We recognize that it is difficult deciding how to take your first steps in sail training.

By definition, the novice sailor has little or no experience in sailing or sail-training; making comparative assessment difficult. When choosing a sail training facility, you should check the factors set out below, to make sure that the facility will meet your individual requirements.

As with most things, price usually reflects quality.

Our company has full time staff including instructors, modern yachts, established facilities, a Chandlery/Boatique, an apartment for student accommodation and our yachts are based at a marina, adjacent to our office which makes operations and maintenance easy; obviously these things cost. They do however ensure quality and service.

An intangible is the feeling you get from responses to your questions; access whether these are appropriate and helpful - it's a good indication of the facility's overall approach.

Our information follows and at the bottom of this page is a check-list of international recommendations for sailing schools; we trust this information is self explanatory and encourage you to contact us at inq@sailing-thailand.com if you have any questions. We will answer your questions straight forwardly refraining from self-serving and marketing factors.

Please refer to http://www.sailing-thailand.com/Client_Feedback.html and http://www.sailingschoolreviewer.com/Thailand/Phuket/yachtpro to get a feel for what our past clients think.

Our Approach

While our approach to training is serious, our philosophy is that you should learn in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Your sailing should be fun, safe and both individually and collectively rewarding. If you're having fun, you'll learn faster.

We endeavor to cater for everybody's personal aspirations and requirements.

To be a good sailor and to enhance the benefits of training, a thorough basic knowledge is imperative. Our progressive approach facilitates speed of learning and skill acquisition, and the integration of theoretical and practical components maximises long-term benefits.

Timely and correct decision making is imperative for your safety and we aim to equip you to make your own decisions in a relatively short time frame.

We recognise previous sailing experience without formal qualifications, and undertake courses at a commensurate level. Please when choosing a course, look carefully at the pre-requisites and ensure you are comfortable at the level prior to the course you are choosing.

To ensure effective training, we use appropriate vessels for the student's experience level and area of training.

All our training vessels are performance oriented designs and are set up as private owners' vessels rather than charter or fleet boats.

Within our fleet, we can demonstrate just about every sailing system the recreational sailor would expect to find.

We approach our job very seriously and enjoy sailing; we make every endeavor to ensure you do too.

Our Training

As a professional sail training organization, our aim is to equip you to sail safely and competently at your desired level of proficiency.

Our training, which has been developed over more than 15 years, is constantly reviewed and refined to ensure you the optimum outcome.

In keeping with most recognized educational theories, we introduce the concepts of sailing as a whole then broaden them and go into more depth.

We have entry level course options that enable you to choose the approach which suits you.

Our syllabus criteria include those of all major training schemes and have been designed with the benefit of a lifetime of experience cruising and racing the world's seas.

They progress from your first sail onto Offshore Standard.

Competence and confidence at your desired level is your reward and your international certificate will be proof of your achievement, not simply attendance.

The proof of our effectiveness is the many people who we have introduced to sailing and now who are cruising and racing around the world, both professionally and recreationally.

Instructor:Student Ratio

Reduced student numbers allows greater instructor time with each student and enable course durations to be condensed.

To illustrate this you can simply divide the number of students into the time available:

5 days for One instructor & 3 students = Instructor time /Student = 5/3 = 1.66 days 4 days for One instructor & 2 students = Instructor time /Student = 4/2 = 2.00 days

The shorter course durations enable you to train to a higher standard in a given time.

It also means that to get to a given standard, the shorter course durations save living expenses here. The slightly higher prices of the Group 2 courses normally more than compensate for additional time spent here on the Group 3 courses.

We also have the facility to combine multiple short periods to enable local people to train without a single large time commitment, eg. 1 x Four Day Live-aboard = 2 x 2 Day Live-aboard.

Occasionally non-student positions are available on course sails at a discounted price.

Our Yachts

Our yachts are set-up to enable you to train on yachts similar to those you will later sail.

Our aim is for you to sail on the types of yachts you will likely encounter in your future sailing and become aware of the levels of maintenance and equipment they should have.

They reflect Yachtpro's dedication to excellence.

We maintain our yachts well and incorporate maintenance tuition in the more advanced courses.

Certification

Simply handing out certificates with course completion is not in your or our interest.

Only students who satisfy the examination components and are in the opinion of their instructor, competent and confident at their certified level, will be successful.

This way we can sleep at night, knowing that you will be sailing safely.

We happily recognise previous sailing experience, without formal qualifications, and undertake courses at a commensurate level. We offer both ASA and ISSA Certifications and there will be more to come soon.

For certification you will be required to complete written examinations up to and including the level attained.

ASA "New Members" receive a new member pack from the ASA with a variety of special offers.

ASA and ISSA International World logbooks are issued to ensure your qualifications are recognized wherever you choose to sail.

Course Standards

Our standards include details of the course aims, yachts, their equipment levels and the course subjects.

On the relevant course pages we you can download the relevant Course Standard we maintain.

Course Structure

Our courses enable you to get cost effective and focused training.

We recognize that the vast majority of our students are spending their holiday time with us and want to enjoy learning to sail on board rather than in a classroom.

At the initial levels, we combine our theoretical and practical components to maximize time on the water.

We encourage students aiming at more advanced levels to study the appropriate theory components prior to arrival and provide theory sessions to ensure they are equipped.

We have specific pages for each type of course we run, all starting from novice level.

Recreational and Cruising Courses - Whether you want to skipper a yacht of your own, or a bareboat on vacation, or crew on a yacht cruising the world's oceans, these are for you.

Fast Track (Multiple Certificate)Courses are on the same "stream" as the Recreational and Cruising Courses and enable you to progress from novice to quite advanced levels quickly.

Racing Courses are run in crew units enabling you to take your new found skills home to your race course.
